10 Song By The Beatles You Didn't Know Were About Ice Spice
Published September 2024 0 Comments | Share:LONDON, UK – It’s no secret that The Beatles wrote a number of songs based on real events and real people but what you may not know is that several of The Beatles’ songs were inspired by Ice Spice.
According to Paul McCartney, The Beatles members were fans of Ice Spice dating back to the early 60s.
“John (Lennon) and I had been out for some chips, and we were talking about Ice Spice and from behind us we hear a voice shout ‘oy, you lot talking about Ice Spice? I love Ice Spice!’. That voice came from Ringo (Starr),” said McCartney. “What most people don’t know is our mutual love of Ice Spice is really what brought the Beatles together. Without her, we might never have become a band at all.”
Here are ten Beatles songs about Ice spice:
“And I Love Her”, A Hard Day’s Night
“This was the first time The Beatles put a song out that was very obviously about Ice Spice,” said McCartney. “The opening lyrics are so obviously about her that I’m shocked people didn’t realize for years… and many still don’t realize. And the line where John sings ‘take my hand, Ice Spice, I love you more than my wife, like for real’ is… yeah, I’m just not sure how people didn’t realize this song was about Ice Spice.”
“Ticket To Ride”, Help!
“People generally think this song is about riding a train or something like that but it’s not, it’s actually about riding Ice Spice,” said Starr. “Don’t look at me like that. I’m not the one that wrote this song. And Paul is the first one to say publicly that he wanted to ride Ice Spice so don’t look at me like I’m the creep for saying that. Paul is the creep. Now don’t get me wrong, I would love to ride Ice Spice, I just wasn’t the one that wrote that particular song about it.”
“Tell Me What You See”, Help!
“When the boys in the band would get stuck creatively, they would play the ‘I Spy’ game to help get the creative juices flowing,” said Beatles historian, Duncan McKellan. “While they were writing the Help! album they got stuck and started playing the game and one of them, I forget who, just keep ‘spying’ Ice Spice so the other one just got frustrated and started shouting ‘tell me what you see, and it better not be Ice Spice this time’ and that’s how this song came about.”
“Michelle”, Rubber Soul
“At one point, we decided as a band that we should branch out a bit, you know, and start writing songs that were not about Ice Spice,” said McCartney. “John came to us with this amazing song about a woman named Michelle and we were all instantly smitten with the idea of this mystery woman. It didn’t take long though for George (Harrison) to point out that Ice Spice’s real name is Michelle. Of course I was a little pissed because I didn’t think of doing that, but it is what it is.”
“Yellow Submarine”, Revolver
“The Revolver album is where we see the most songs about Ice Spice,” said McKellen. “The boys were openly competing for Ice Spice’s affection. Even Ringo took a shot with ‘Yellow Submarine’ a song he wrote while trippin’ balls and sitting in a café across the street from where Ice Spice was living.”
“Doctor Robert”, Revolver
“Doctor Robert was the codename that Paul and George came up with for Ice Spice and it kinda stuck,” Starr said. “Whenever we were in mixed company, one of use would eventually say ‘Welp, time to go see Doctor Robert,’ and we would all run off to take various psychedelics and watch the latest Ice Spice videos on YouTube. It was a really fun time because it would get us all out of these really boring situations. Yeah, then we wrote a song about it.”
“Got to Get You into My Life”, Revolver
“When John… or Paul… or whoever wrote this song wrote it they were thinking about two things – radiator fluid and Ice Spice,” said Starr. “I mean, both of those things we were really keen to get into our lives. Radiator fluid for our cars, Ice Spice for companionship. Both equally important at that time of our lives.”
“Penny Lane”, Magical Mystery Tour
“Penny Lane is kind of the center point of all things Ice Spice,” said McKellen. “Ice Spice lived on Penny Lane for a time. Not so coincidentally, Penny Lane is where the boys would go to relax and write songs. It was really the central point for a lot of the stuff that was going on at the time. Penny Lane is also where George saw a prostitute that kind of looked like Ice Spice. I want to emphasize that it was NOT Ice Spice, and George didn’t engage in here services. She just really looked like Ice Spice, and the boys thought that was pretty cool.”
“All You Need Is Love”, Magical Mystery Tour
“A lot of people don’t know that the actual title of the song is ‘All You Need Is Love and Ice Spice Sitting On Your Face,’” said McCartney. “The label thought that title was a bit too much for American radio stations, so we shortened it up a bit. Americans really had a thing against face sitting for a while. Not us Brits though. We loved it. Still love it! I had my face sat on just the other day.”
“Mean Mr. Mustard”, Abbey Road
“Mean Mr. Mustard is probably the song with the most indirect references to Ice Spice,” said McKellen. “For several years before the recording of Abbey Road, the boys and Ice Spice had a weekly get together where they would play Clue for hours on end. Ice Spice, for whatever reason always chose to play as Colonel Mustard. The thing that probably very few people know, is that Ice Spice is really good at Clue. She’s like a savant at that game. It might just be an urban myth, but she has supposedly never lost a game. That got the boys so mad that they couldn’t ever beat her, so they wrote this song. Of course they had to change the name a bit so that they didn’t get sued by Milton Bradley, but the intent is there.”
