BELLINGHAM, WA – A local man has ruined Karaoke night at a popular bar by singing a “total bummer of a song.”
“It was great! Everyone was singing and drinking and having fun until that sad dude got up on stage and bummed everyone the fuck out with his sad as fuck story and sad as fuck song,” said Sam Gungie. “After that most people just left. Vibe was cooked.”
While at Big Bill’s Bar and Grill for Karaoke night, Lane Hannigly, sang “Needle in the Hay” by Elliott Smith, a song about someone struggling with heroin addiction.
“We were out having a good time, singin’, goofin’ and then this dude gets up and wrecks the vibe by telling everyone about how he used to be messed up on heroin and how it pretty much messed him up forever and how all he could think about was drugs and like suicide and stuff and how he was gonna sing a song about being on heroin by a guy that killed himself,” said Erin Figgins. “And then he sings this fuckin bummer of a song that just made everyone sad. Yeah, so we bailed after that. I ain’t got time for that kinda shit. If I wanted to be all depressed, I’d go to my mom’s house and hear all about how her neighbor’s kid is a doctor now.”
Hannigly followed another singer, Kristin Vefio, who sang “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus.
“I finished my song, and everyone was clapping and yelling, and it was a good time. People were happy,” said Vefio. “And then (Hannigly) comes up and makes everyone cry by talking about a bunch of sad things and then singing this sad as fuck song. What the fuck was that? And after he sang, like, no one wanted to come up after that. I was totally bummed, too, because I had another song in the queue, ‘The Bad Touch’ by The Bloodhound Gang, and that song is always a hit. But we bailed. I don’t wanna be sad!”
The host of Karaoke, DJ Beat Droppa, said that she was not surprised by someone singing a “bummer” song and that it happens frequently.
“Oh yeah. It happens all the time,” said Droppa. “Someone has a little too much beer and decides to get up on stage and make everyone sad. I try to catch it but sometimes I’m doing too much coke to read. You know what I mean? Like that night? The chick who sang ‘My Sharona’ gave me some fingers under the table and then we both took a hit of acid. So yeah, sometimes things slip by me. Sorry, not sorry!”
Despite the fact that his song effectively ended the night, Hannigly said that he wasn’t sorry and would definitely think about singing the song again.
“Sometimes, you just need to let the darkness out,” said Hannigly. “I know it’s a bummer sometimes, but I mean, look around. This shit sucks, and sometimes, people need to be reminded of that. Like this one time when I was all fucked up on heroin and I saw this thing that looked like a baby, but it wasn’t a baby, I mean it kinda looked like a baby but it also kinda looked like a frog. You know what I mean? Well anyway, I think about that night a lot. Me and that weird frog baby thing, we connected on a whole spiritual level. But not in a good way. In a way where the baby frog thing was stealing my soul. That’s what life is like these days.”
